Cassandra Database: Download & Install

This page has our notes on how to download and install the Cassandra database.

Cassandra is available for many systems, and in a variety of formats. These notes are for Cassandra 0.5x and Ubuntu 9.x.

Get Java, Ant & Ivy

First we need Java, Ant & Ivy:

Cassandra is written in Java and runs using Java.
Cassandra uses Ant and Ivy during the installation.

Download Cassandra

Download Cassandra from the website in a tar .tgz format,
or from Apache.org using the git clone command:
  git clone git://git.apache.org/cassandra.git 

System Setup

Add a system group and system user for Cassandra:
 groupadd cassandra
 useradd cassandra -g cassandra -d /var/lib/cassandra -s /bin/false

Create Cassandra directories

Create Cassandra directories for logging and storage:
  sudo mkdir -p /var/log/cassandra
  sudo chown -R cassandra /var/log/cassandra
  sudo mkdir -p /var/lib/cassandra
  sudo chown -R cassandra /var/lib/cassandra

Ant Build

To run the ant build command:
  ant -lib /usr/share/java/:/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-gcj-4.4/lib/
